COMIC ART: THE IRISH CONNECTION
COMIC ART…THE IRISH CONNECTION
I have often admitted without any hesitation whatsoever in other writing that graphic art (comic books) played a significant role in my becoming a literate individual. Aside from the fact that, as a child, my mother regularly read from the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales to me as an infant, once I got a grasp on reading by myself, I instinctively gravitated to first the Little Golden Books series and then to what passed for comic books of the 50s era. These usually consisted of science fiction and adventure stories, such as ‘Black Hawk’, ‘Wonder Woman’ and others such as ‘Weird Fantasy’ and ‘Strange Tales’. And of course, I also read, like countless other kids, the Walt Disney inspired comics (‘Donald Duck’, ‘Mickey Mouse’, et al). Thus, began a lifetime of omnivorous reading that continues today as strongly as it was back when I was just discovering the infinitely broad and diverse world of printed literature.
As a child, no Sunday was complete without first reading the serial comics strips in the newspaper to stay abreast of the latest perils faced by Dick Tracy, Little Orphan Annie, Dagwood & Blondie, Prince Valiant, Steve Canyon and the characters of all of the regular syndicated strips newspaper strips.
