“If sex is painful, unpleasant, or unpleasurable for women, why wouldn’t they avoid it?” Pain, unfortunately, is a vital, ineradicable aspect of life. There is pain all about us. We experience pain every single day of our lives, of types and quantities that defy categorisation. In America, we have over the most recent decades ‘superdefined’ the concept of pain to the point where we have become a nation of delicately cosseted, sensorially protected individuals who cry out ‘victim’ at the least provocation. As for ‘unpleasant’ or ‘unpleasurable’, perhaps these are also chic manifestations of the same social ethos at work in America today. Pain is unavoidable. Birth is painful, but most don’t wish to refrain from creating new life because it’s too painful. In fact, sex itself is a precursor to death. When a child is born, it has already begun to die…and most deaths these days are painful (thanks to our exaggerated fear of death and the superhuman effort medical science makes to extend life…regardless of pain and inevitable death.

My suggestion for all the modern generation who automatically associate pain with what George Orwell would have characterised as ‘doubleplusungood’ feelings is this: take a virtual voyage back to ancient Greece or Rome and study the Stoic philosophers (such as Seneca and Marcus Aurelius, to name just two). Get used to the fact that some pain is unavoidable in everything we humming beans engage in. Get used to it and embrace it as a necessary requisite to the life experience.

That having been shared, perhaps we should all avoid sex altogether, since the male of the species is biologically programmed for aggressiveness and painful sex (within moderation) is going to be in the cards for millennia to come. In fact, on second thought, yes…lets avoid sex altogether and just let humanity die out completely. There’s little doubt that this long-suffering world would be FAR better off without humming beans. Let’s give Ma Nature another chance to come up with a whole new ‘highest evolved sentient life form’ since humanity has obviously failed to live up to its expected potential. That would be the ultimate solution to the problem of having to accept and deal with some pain every second of our parasitic little earthly lives.
