You, Douglas, have managed to say clearly and succinctly what I have tried and failed on numerous occasions to articulate cogently and clearly, but in a manner that does not cast blame or involve ‘dissing’ the wisdom of users. It is the polished, disciplined essence of one who stays scrupulously on-topic, without yielding (as I do) to tangential discourses about ‘idiots’, ‘cretins’ and ‘dimbulbs’ (as I am so wont to, unfortunately). I can only admire you for this sterling trait. Sadly, our digital, materialist, market-driven existence has successfully substituted fantasy for reality to such an extent that something like the ‘Disneyworld’ experience appears as real and substantial as a walk through the heart of a busy urban downtown area. Digital technology merely enhances and amplifies that effect exponentially as it separates and further compartmentalises us. And we, superficial creatures that we are and attracted to just about anything that catches our fancy, like insects to a warm light bulb, are skillfully caught up in the mechanical dynamics of this milieu of digitalised social media to our detriment. Kudos for this piece, Douglas.
